ABNC Archival Letter Discussing an “Argentine Duel”.Argentina and London, 28th January 1901. Well written 3 page letter from C.H.Sanford to Theodore H.Freeland, Esq. discussing his escapades as the business representative of ABNC in Argentina and how he thought it almost cost him his life. The letter starts out with his concern for the President of ABNC, Mr.Macdonough, who is ill and cannot attend business matters and that Mr. Shepard is under the weather and has ..la grippe.... He discusses how he is very gratified with the success of the accounts rendered by S.B.Hale & Co.. The highlight of the letter is his recount of his altercation on the settlement of ABNC's account in Cordova that became very heated and escalated almost into a duel with some of the parties and Sanford fearing for his life and carrying a pistol everywhere he went. He stated ...not a French, but an Argentine duel and for some days I went around with my pistol expecting to be shot at every corner..... He then recounts how the gentleman whom he had the altercation with came by and they settled their differences peacefully. He ends the letter with discussing the New Emission from Argentina, that they had printed themselves, and the trouble they had with the paper and were presently buying new paper and trying it all over again. Interesting and historic archival letter from the ABNC archive.
