AIA Sale 42 - U.S., Chinese & Worldwide Banknotes, Coins, Scripophily and Security Printing Ephemera

Auction Details

On behalf of the entire Archives International Auctions team, I would like to personally welcome you to our 42nd auction we have held over the last ten years. We are excited to offer close to 1100 lots of rare and desirable banknotes, coins and scripophily including additional selections from the Alexander I. Pogrebetsky Family Archives of rare Chinese banknotes as well as an impressive variety of U.S. & Worldwide Banknotes, Coins, and Scripophily.

Included in the sale are consignments from numerous estates and longtime collections with many items having never been offered at auction previously. The sale is broken into two sessions, the first includes Chinese and Worldwide Banknotes, Scripophily, and Coins and the second session consists of U.S. Banknotes, Scripophily, Coins, Security Printing Ephemera, and historic Documents and fiscal items.

Some of the many foreign highlights of the auction include over 170 lots of Chinese and Asian banknotes, coins, and scripophily; a $10 issued Deutsch-Asiatische Bank, 1907 "Shanghai" Branch Rarity; a 1910, $500, Russo-Asiatic Bank issued rarity and numerous banknotes from the Alexander I Pogrebetsky Family Archives will also be included. There are an additional 428 lots of worldwide banknotes including a U.A.E., 1973 Specimen set from 1 Dirham to 1000 Dirhams; a discovery specimen set of 3 notes from Colombia, Senores Fernando Restrepo & Hijos, ND (1893) approval specimens; there will be over 75 lots of Russian banknotes, and hundreds of other rare and attractive banknotes from all over the world. We are also privileged to offer a discovery collection of 54 different Russian specimen bonds that have never been offered previously dating from 1866 to 1927 that are sure to create significant excitement in the collecting community.

U.S. banknote section will feature over 200 lots consisting of U.S. Colonial, Confederate, Obsolete, Small and Large type, fractional and depression scrip. Highlights include the Hollidaysburg collection of 37 lots of rare 1840 to 1860’s obsolete scrip notes, many having been off the market for over 25 years and very rare; Large type notes are highlighted by a 1923 $10 Fr.#123 “Poker Chip” note; a 1902 $5, Ely, Nevada Territorial National rarity is offered with only 14 large sized notes known for the state; and numerous other notes.

Coins are represented by a nice early 1500’s to 1600’s English coin assortment and desirable U.S. coins from ½ cents to Silver dollars. The sale offers Security Printing Ephemera including early ca.1820-40’s copper printing plates from early Security Printers, two different and rare Advertising broadsides from Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Co., ca. 1820-30’s and by International Bank Note Company, ca.1883-1890’s, as well as numerous rare items that seldom come up for auction. The auction ends with a exciting assortment of U.S. & World scripophily.

We are now working on our Spring and Summer 2017 auctions and are seeking consignments for our upcoming April to June 2017 auctions.
