Tallapoosa, Alabama, 1891. 3 Shares Capital Stock I/U Stock Certificate, Black print with brown border and underprint, Company title at top center with Alabama seal at center, S/N 1545, Signed by Benjamin Franklin Butler, (1818-1893), who was an American lawyer, politician, and Union general during the Civil War. He is best remembered for his controversial military administration of New Orleans and for declaring escaped enslaved people "contraband of war," a policy that helped pave the way for broader emancipation. After the war, he served in Congress and later as Governor of Massachusetts. Fine condition with stains. Lot includes portrait of Butler. (From the Robert Kluge Collection).
