Mississippi, 1820. Handwritten, 2 piece Superior Court document outlining the complaint of James Metcalf, Chairman and one of the Commissioners of Health and Police for the city of Natchez, against John De Hart, a captain. In this piece, Metcalf claims that De Hart owes the sum of $2,000 for landing his Steam Boat, the Columbus, in the city of Natchez without "without the permit of the Health Offices of the said Commissioners of Health and Police," which is a great "misdemeanor" and subject to fine. A counter-argument is handwritten on the back of the first page by the defending attorney. VG condition with archival repairs, some toning, and damage along margins. Interesting piece of Southern Antebellum history as well as an extremely early example of steamboats on the Mississippi River.
