Norway, 1912. 1000 Kronor I/U Bond $1042, Black text, Ship at top hunting a whale. Aktieselskapet Hektor was a whaling company, and in 1912 was issued with a license to establish a shore-based whaling station. The company set up a permanent base on Deception Island, located in the South Shetland Islands archipelago, with the safest harbors in Antarctica. This was the only successful shore-based industry ever to operate in Antarctica, reaping high profits in its first years. Following the collapse of the whale oil industry, the Hektor factory finally ceased operations in 1931, ending commercial whaling at the island entirely.
