Alabama, 1846. Handwritten appraisal of the property belonging to the Estate of Charles Buxton, the deceased. This detailed inventory lists Buxton's goods and properties with their corresponding appraised value, including a number of slaves owned by Buxton. The names of the enslaved people catalogued in the piece are Isaac, Ruben, Jack, Henry, Tammy, Lucy, Diana, Rachel, Cely, Jane, Anderson, Tom, Frank, Vinsent, Sam, Louisa, Matilda, and Nia. Their names and values are listed beside 280 acres of land, 22 chairs, various horses and farm animals, kitchen utensils, and other assorted household goods. The total value of the estate was $6,710.74 (actually miscalculated by 10 cents), and is shown on the back with the signatures of the witnesses and appraisers. Fine condition with significant blue staining and toning, splits have been archivally reinforced. A stark reminder of America's slave owning history, and a piece of history from pre-Civil War South.
