New York, 1858. 2 Shares I/U Capital Stock Certificate, Black text with black border, Train passing on tracks at top center. Fine condition with some toning. Signed by Henry Wells as President and William Fargo as Secretary. William George Fargo (May 20, 1818 - August 3, 1881) was a pioneer American expressman who helped found the modern-day financial firms of American Express Company and Wells Fargo with his business partner, Henry Wells. He was also the 27th Mayor of Buffalo, serving from 1862 until 1866 during the U.S. Civil War. Henry Wells (December 12, 1805 - December 10, 1878) formed Wells, Butterfield & Company with John Butterfield as the successor of Butterfield & Wasson. The same year the American Express Company was formed as a consolidation of Wells & Company; Livingston, Fargo & Company; and Wells, Butterfield & Company. Wells was president of American Express from 1850 to 1868. Wells and Fargo also started Wells Fargo & Co. in 1852 when Butterfield and other directors objected to the proposal that American Express extend its operations to California.
