Houghton County, Michigan, 1865, 50 Shares, Issue and uncancelled, Michigan mining map of Arcadian Copper Company and Portage Lake on top middle, Cert.#38, the certificate appears in VF to XF condition but there is a small internal 1.5 inch tear near the lower right President signature. This historic document was printed by Snyder, Black & Sturn and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of a map. This item has been hand signed by the Company’s President, Edward Learned and Secretary, C. P. Dixon and is over 146 years old. Only 2 known. The Arcadian mining area is located in the Hancock, Michigan area. The Arcadian and Concord Mining Company explored the lode in 1864. The Arcadian Mining Company was organized in 1864 then in 1898 consolidated with other mines to become the Arcadian Copper Company in 1898. Between falling copper prices and the erratic production it eventually closed in 1903. It consisted of 7 mining shafts in the North east of the Isle Royale Lode with main production from 1899-1902. The Arcadian mines produced 4,806,141 pounds of copper.
