New York, 1885. I/U Second Exchange for 2072.50 Francs, Black text with black border, ornate border with Rothschild coat of arms at left. Signed by August Belmont. The Rothschild family is a wealthy Jewish family originally from Frankfurt that rose to prominence with Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744–1812), a court factor to the German Landgraves of Hesse-Kassel in the Free City of Frankfurt, Holy Roman Empire, who established his banking business in the 1760s. During the 19th century, the Rothschild family possessed the largest private fortune in the world, as well as in modern world history. August Belmont Sr. (December 8, 1813 – November 24, 1890) was a German-American politician, financier, foreign diplomat, and party chairman of the Democratic National Committee during the 1860s, and later a horse-breeder and racehorse owner. He was the founder and namesake of the Belmont Stakes, third leg of the Triple Crown series of American thoroughbred horse racing. RWH&E.
