Liberty Portrait in Intaglio black printing on Celluloid, printed by Baldwin & Gleason, ca.1880s, 6 x 6 cms, off-yellow celluloid color. Marcus Wickliffe Baldwin and Thomas Gleason founded Baldwin & Gleason and pioneered intaglio printing on celluloid. This very popular printing novelty flourished for several years drawing many competitors. The company flourished until 1891 when there was no longer sufficient intaglio printing business to sustain them. They survived by engraving stationary.
