Baltimore, Maryland, 1860. 125 Shares Capital Stock I/C Certificate, Black printing with black border, Locomotive at top with allegorical woman at either side, S/N 28240, Signed by John Hopkins as Railroad President, POCs along signatures at bottom, Fine to VF condition with toning at edges and ink burns, TCC&Co. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States, with its first section opening in 1830. John Hopkins was a prominent Baltimore businessman and philanthropist who played a key role in the B&O as an early stockholder, helping to secure financial support for the railroad's expansion. Founded in 1827, the B&O was the first chartered railroad in the U.S. to offer scheduled freight and passenger services, crucially linking the East Coast with the Midwest. Beyond his involvement with the railroad, Hopkins is best known for founding Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital, leaving a lasting legacy in education and healthcare. Together, they significantly shaped Baltimore's economic landscape and contributed to the development of the nation's transportation infrastructure.
