Calcutta, India, 183x (ca.1830), 16 Rupees (= 1 Gold Mohur), P-S137, Bank of Hindustan, an unissued note, black with ornate border and no vignette, No Serial Numbers, The note has fresh crisp paper and has apparently survived to the present due to being folded and kept as a souvenir. This note is fully printed on banknote paper and may only exist in 4 or 5 examples worldwide. Extremely rare and desirable. The only available issued notes on banks in India are those from the Bank of Bengal cut cancelled hoard and the occasional Bank of Bombay 10 Rupee. Recently an Indian Calcutta Bank black & white proof front 5 Rupee printed on card brought US$29,000 (in 2010 at a Lyn Knight sale). We estimate this piece conservatively in the range of $15,000-20,000.
