Illinois and Sweden, 1854-58. Pair of Handwritten Letters from the Bishop Hill Colony. The 1848 letter, on blue paper, discusses a specific bank currency in circulation. The 1854 letter, on white paper, also discusses circulation of bills, as well as the sum of $988. Both are in Fine-VF condition. The Bishop Hill Colony was a utopian religious community in Illinois. Founded in 1846 by religious dissidents who emigrated from Sweden to establish a new way of life on the Illinois prairie, the colony was run as a commune until its dissolution in 1861. (2)
