Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island. 1867. 3 Shares, # 914, Black, Arms of Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island in middle with dog on UL and allegorical Liberty on LL with ornate text on left describing railroad "Boston, Hartford, & Erie and New York & Boston Air Line United in 1864. Uncancelled, Revenue Stamp attached. John S. Eldridge was president of the Erie Railroad from October 1867 to July 1868 and was replaced by Jay Gould in July 1868. Intimately involved in the Erie Railroad which was known as the "the scarlet woman of Wall Street" in the mid-19th century, when it was the object of financial struggles between Daniel Drew, Jay Gould, James Fisk, and Cornelius Vanderbilt. Manipulations of its stock by Gould and Fisk became notorious. Eldridge was involved with Gould and Fisk.
