Franklin, New Jersey......, (Inc. and offices in New York), 1874. 50 Shares Capital Stock I/U Certificate, S/N 137, Black on pink border and underprint, Miners working at top with locomotive, factory, and river in background, VF-XF condition with close cut margin at left side. In 1873 William Kemble went to work for Edwin Wilson at the Bristol Franklinite Company. As the mine's representative he had a run-in with the New Jersey Zinc Company. They took turns confronting each other with ever increasing numbers of men. When the Bristol was sued Wilson and the Bristol Franklinite Company defaulted and left Franklin. That left Kemble responsible for paying $163. After the sheriff took his horses, cows, carpet chairs, etc., he finally paid 18 months late. According to this story, this stock was issued after the Bristol packed up and left Franklin. Franklinite is named after the locality of Franklin, New Jersey, where it is found. To date, this mineral is found only at Franklin and neighboring Ogdensburg, New Jersey.
