Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1873-75. Pair of First Exchanges issued to C. Schrack & Co. One is dated August 30th, 1873 and issued for 10 Pounds and 2/11 Sterling; the other is dated October 2nd, 1875 and issued for 40 Pounds and 13/5 Sterling. Both are issued by and hand stamped with "Brown Brothers & Co." at bottom right corners. Both are in VF condition with very few signs of aging. Brown Bros. & Co. was an investment bank from 1818 until its merger with Harriman Brothers & Company in 1931, to form Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. C. Schrack & Co. was at one time America's oldest varnish manufacturer, established by Christian Schrack in Philadelphia in 1816. Over time, the company expanded to include paint, pigment, oil, lacquer, and other painting and varnish related products. After Schrack's death in 1854, the company was run by his former apprentice, Joseph Stulb. During the Civil War, C. Schrack & Co. added window glass, palette knives, and imported goods from Europe to their line. (2)
