Virginia, 1877. $1000 I/U 8% Coupon Bond, S/N 9, Black text with ornate black border. Fine condition, A. Hoen & Co. Unlisted denomination in Cox, Very Rare bond. Signed by William P. Munford as Secretary and John W. Johnston as President. The Richmond and Alleghany Railroad was built along the James River along the route of the James River and Kanawha Canal from Richmond on the Fall Line at the head of navigation to a point west of Lynchburg near Buchanan, Virginia, and combined with the Buchanan and Clifton Forge Railway Company to reach Clifton Forge, Virginia. John Warfield Johnston (September 9, 1818 _ February 27, 1889) was an American lawyer and politician from Abingdon, Virginia. He served in the Virginia State Senate, and represented Virginia in the United States Senate when the state was readmitted after the American Civil War. Johnston was also the first person who had sided with the Confederacy to serve in the United States Senate post-Civil War. The railroad is listed in Cox but no examples have been seen previously.
