Virginia and North Carolina, Feb. 10th, 1865. Post Office Warrant from the Confederate States of America Issued for $114.97, S/N 5900, Black text with thin black border, "Transportation of the Mails" in banner at left, Portrait of a man at top center, Signed by John H. Reagan as Postmaster General at bottom right, but very faint signature. Issued to Samuel Forester. John H. Reagan (8 October 1818 - 6 March 1905) was a Texas politician who resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives when Texas seceded from the United States to join the Confederacy. He was a member of Jefferson Davis's cabinet, serving as the Postmaster General. Following the Civil War, Reagan supported collaboration with the subsequent U.S. government, a perspective that was not shared by many of his fellow peers. He continued to serve the United States in a political capacity, and was elected to Congress, then later the U.S. Senate. Printed by Archer & Daly. This Post Office warrant was issued a little over 2 months before the end of the war officially ended on April 22nd, 1865.
