Issued group comprising: c.1890s The Longfellow Gold Mining & Milling Co., 1000 shares, gilt and black with ornate border and engraved miners-at-work vignette at top, large embossed gold seal at left, “Mines at Cripple Creek” on face; c.1890s The Freeport and Cripple Creek Gold Mining Company, 10,000 shares, broad gilt border with central underground-mining vignette, embossed gold seal at left, signed by company officers; c.1890s The Justine Gold Mining Company, 5000 shares, gilt and black with panoramic Cripple Creek camp scene at center flanked by mining views, large embossed gold seal; c.1890s The Clara M. W. Gold Mining & Milling Company, 5000 shares, brown border with oval miners vignette at top and bronze embossed corporate seal at lower left. all are in Choice VF condition or better. The Cripple Creek–Victor gold field, discovered in 1890, quickly became Colorado’s premier gold camp, linked by the F.&C.C. and Midland Terminal railroads and famous for prolific lode-gold production—issuing a wealth of elaborately engraved certificates like these.
