Colorado, Cripple Creek District, 1896–1897. Issued group comprising: 1896 The Des-Moines Gold Mining Company, 1000 shares, grey-black with mountain vignette at top, large gilt seal at left, “Mines in the Cripple Creek Mining District” noted on face; 1897 The Kangaroo Gold Mining and Milling Company, 5000 shares, broad gilt border with central underground-mining vignette and allegorical devices, embossed gold seal; 1896 The Avondale Gold Mining Co., 5000 shares, gilt and black with panoramic camp view at center flanked by mining scenes, large embossed gold seal; 1897 The Aztec Gold Mining Company, 5000 shares, gilt border with miners-at-work vignette at top and embossed gold seal. All are in Choice VF condition or better. The Cripple Creek–Victor gold field, discovered in 1890, rapidly became Colorado’s premier gold camp with rail connections via the F.&C.C. and Midland Terminal and ultimately one of the nation’s great lode-gold producers—spawning the richly engraved certificates represented here.
