California and Salt Lake Mail Line Obsolete Banknote.California and Utah, 18xx (ca.1851), $1, Similar to Rust 106 (a $10) but unlisted denomination ($10 and $50 listed), Unissued, Blue on red ONE protector, young woman holding baby on lower left, Native American with rifle on lower right and dramatic central vignette of speeding stage coach with additional horseman following for protection with band of Native Americans watching them pass from a distance, No serial numbers, 2 large margins and 2 medium margins, 2 light horizontal folds near bottom margin and a small spot near the bottom right border, otherwise a very attractive note that would grade Choice VG to XF condition. The Company was founded by George Chorpenning in the early 1850's and was instrumental in the early development of California and its integration as a state with the rest of the country. Chorpenning was a pioneer in early mail, freight and passenger transportation throught the dry, arid regions of California to Salt lake, Utah. Chorpening won the contract for the western division of the California and Salt Lake Mail Line from Placerville, California, to Salt Lake City. He used his original 1851 northern route, which ran north of the Great Salt Lake and then followed the Humboldt River Valley to and across the Sierras and into Placerville, California. A one-way trip took approximately twelve days. A trophy note and rare opportunity to purchase a classic U.S. Western obsolete banknote. (Round Mountain Collection, Part 1).
