California, 1889. $1000 Specimen 5% Fifty Year Coupon Bond, Black print with olive green ornate border and underprint, Multiple figures at top and bottom of certificate with railroad moving through valley in circular frame at center, Specimen overprints and POCs, Fine to VF condition with splitting at fold lines, ABNC. The Central Pacific Railroad, incorporated in 1861 and chartered in 1862 by the "Big Four" businessmen, it was to build the Western portion beginning in Sacramento, California, of the First Transcontinental Railroad, completing it in 1869. The Central Pacific laid rails from California to Utah and met up with the Union Pacific in 1869 forming the first transcontinental railroad. ABNC. The railroad was crucial in connecting the U.S. coast-to-coast, driving westward expansion and economic growth. It relied heavily on Chinese laborers, who worked under harsh conditions. By the 1880s, it merged into the Southern Pacific Railroad but retained its identity until 1959. The CPRR played a key role in shaping the American West despite facing financial, legal, and labor challenges.
