Maryland 1837. 5 Shares I/U Capital Stock Certificate, S/N 41, Black text with thin black border, People strolling along the Canal and the Potomac River at left. Signed by George C. Washington as company president, Fine-VF condition with some toning and small holes at fold lines. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Co. was formally organized in 1828, in succession to the old Potowmack Co. The C & O Canal operated from 1831 until 1924 along the Potomac River between Washington, D.C. and Cumberland, Maryland. George Corbin Washington (August 20, 1789 - July 17, 1854) was a United States Congressman from the third and fifth districts of Maryland, serving four terms from 1827 to 1833, and 1835 to 1837. He was also a grandnephew of U.S. President George Washington. After his service in Congress, Washington became president of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company. He was also appointed by President John Tyler in 1844 as a commissioner to adjust and settle the claims arising under the treaty of 1835 with the Cherokee Indians. Historic and dramatic certificate rarely offered at auction. This example sold in Lot 1277 in the 1997 Memphis auction with 2 other examples for $3,575. (From the Collection of John E. Herzog)
