Missouri, October 1861. Handwritten letter and corresponding Postal Cover from Union Soldier PVT Samuel Tuttle, writing from Jefferson City to his family back home in Galion, Ohio. Tuttle writes that while his brother Daniel is well, he remains in the hospital, "not heartsick nor homesick just a little lame," and that he is being taken care of. Tuttle mentions that the hospital has a "great many sick" within its walls. Tuttle goes on to describe some military details, writing that "yesterday the picket guards were [sic] fired on eight miles from here at the Osage Bridge," but no one was hurt. He also writes "There was a report come in yesterday that there was a company...camped about four miles from her [sic] 40 of our boys shouldered musket and went out to see them and give them a start but they said they were for the Union and showed a pass," and then went on undisturbed. According to Tuttle, about 9,000 troops were stationed in the area at the time of his writing. VF condition, exceptional piece of military history from the Civil War. Samuel Tuttle (1839-1868) was a PVT in the 16th Ohio Light Artillery Regiment. He enlisted with his brother Daniel Tuttle (1837-1913), but Samuel was discharged on account of disability in January of 1862, just a few months after writing this letter. Likely his "lameness" and pain in hip and back referenced in this document would require him to exit service.
