Columbus, Kentucky. 1863, "…the hospital has been broke up and both have been consolidated in to one and I am going to remain here until the Hospital Furniture is moved or turned over to the Quartermaster… Dr. Riley… said that he had got the Blanks (furlough) signed by Dr. Allen Med Inspector of Gen. Grant's Dept...our Co has been in a fight since they went down to Memphis and I heard that there was seven of our men missing... our Col John Murray has been in a fight down in Vicksburg and was wounded in the head...I would like to be home on the 4th of July...they are making great preparations here to celebrate the 4th on the Old Fashioned Style and will have a gay old time of it...I don't know as I shall go to Celebration as I have seen plenty of Celebrations in earnest within the last two years there has been 25-30 boys Furloughed from here with the last two weeks and as many more have been sent to Mound City to be discharged..." VF condition letter with envelope and 3 cent stamp in fair condition. Great piece of Civil War era Ephemera.
