Keelings Cocos, September 26, 1879, fc. 1/4 Rupee Copper, P-Unlisted earlier date 1879, Listed in SCWPM dating from 1887 to 1888, Black printing, Small size, 54 x 42mm, Hand signed by J.C. Ross, embossed seal at center top, S/N 943, VF to XF condition. Amazing high grade note with most examples from the 1887 time period usually with significant ink burn, this unlisted earlier issue has no ink burn, bright and clear printing as well as legible handwritten dates and signature. It appears to be printed on sheepskin, but please inspect, the later 1887-88 Issue is unpriced in SCWPM and this unlisted earlier issue should attract considerable interest. The Keeling Cocos Islands are a group of 27 small coral islands located in the Indian Ocean, first discovered in 1609. In 1857 they became a British Protectorate and were administered by the Clunies-Ross family until the islands were sold to Australia in 1978. Rare and desirable note possibly never offered before at public auction.
