Keelings Cocos, September 7, 1880, fc. 1/4 Rupee Copper, P-Unlisted earlier date 1880, Listed in SCWPM dating from 1887 to 1888, Black printing, Large Size, 65 x 49 mm, Printed on thin parchment, Hand signed by J.C. Ross, embossed seal at center top, S/N 92, VG to VG+ condition. Amazing note with most examples from the 1887 time period usually with significant ink burn, this unlisted earlier issue has no ink burn. The later 1887-88 Issue is unpriced in SCWPM and this unlisted earlier issue should attract considerable interest. The Keeling Cocos Islands are a group of 27 small coral islands located in the Indian Ocean, first discovered in 1609. In 1857 they became a British Protectorate and were administered by the Clunies-Ross family until the islands were sold to Australia in 1978. Rare and desirable note possibly never offered before at public auction.
