Salem, Massachusetts, 1786. Fascinating piece of history, a partially printed, partially handwritten Wage Document for a voyage bound from the Port of Salem to the West Indies and back. The Master of the ship was Joseph Strout, and includes his wages, as well as his time of entry, being May the 27th, 1786. Also included are two other seamen with their corresponding wages. Additional men were likely listed, however it has been cut off at the bottom. The document asserts that the "said Seamen and Mariners, do hereby promise and oblige themselves to do their Duty" while on the journey. The back of the piece includes interesting handwriting from the time period, such as the practicing of the letter "G" in script, and the phrase "Give to the poor." Fine condition for its age with toning, staining, and signs of aging, but in remarkable condition for the time period.
