New York.... Lot of 2 pieces, Includes: 1866 Handwritten balance sheet for Cornelius Vanderbilt "in account with the Saratoga & H.R. R.R. Co." (Hudson River Rail Road Company) with calculations, Fine condition in his hand with his signature on the top left; Also includes a 50 Shares, 1962 I/C Capital Stock Certificate in brown with his portrait on top, XF condition with POCs. Cornelius Vanderbilt (May 27, 1794 Ð January 4, 1877) was an American business magnate who built his wealth in railroads and shipping. After working with his father's business, Vanderbilt worked his way into leadership positions in the inland water trade and invested in the rapidly growing railroad industry. Nicknamed "The Commodore", he is known for owning the New York Central Railroad. As one of the richest Americans in history and wealthiest figures overall, Vanderbilt was the patriarch of the wealthy and influential Vanderbilt family. He provided the initial gift to found Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Autographed documents with his signature are rare. (John E. Herzog Collection)
