12 Nov 1862, 1000 Francs, P-Unlisted, Printed sight note, payable by the 'Chef du Corps exp‚ditionnaire du Mexique', issued at Paris, Serial #125438.Black on light yellow paper, no vignette, ornate border and text. *These payment orders were issued for expenses incurred by the French Expeditionary Corps in Mexico, which lead to the crowning of Maximillian as Emperor of Mexico. The draft is inscribed "Traite du Directeur des Caisses centrales du Tresor public (Service de l'Arm‚e Fran‡aise)" and is particularly interesting in that it is payable for a fixed printed amount, whereas normally staff notes would be payable for varying amounts. XF condition. With attractive embossed seal of the Caisse Centrale. The French invaded Mexico in late 1861 to force them to repay debts that Benito Juarez had defaulted on to his European creditors. France, with other European help and the authorization of the 1861 "Treaty of London" invaded Mexico and then on there own decided to occupy the country. They were defeated on May 5th 1862 at the Battle of Puebla by a smaller Mexican force. The French occupying forces placed Maximilian I, Emperor of Mexico on the throne of Mexico in 1864. The French, under U.S. pressure, eventually withdrew in 1866-1867. Historic and rare document and first time seen by the cataloger.
