Culpeper, Virginia. Culpeper Savings Bank, Culpeper, Virginia, 1861, $2, BC50-40, Issued Obsolete Scrip Note, black on off white paper, No Serial Number, Numeral "2"s on left and right with title in middle, Fine condition but possibly one of the highest graded notes for this issue which is usually found very worn and ragged. The bank was authorized by the General Assembly on February 24, 1860. The note dates show continued activity to the fall of 1861, but it is unlikely that the bank survived the Civil War and its economic fallout on southern financial institutions. All of the notes are rare to very rare, with Jones-Littlefield estimating small surviving populations of 5-9 notes for each denomination.
