Middlebury, Vermont, 1868. $33.18 Post Office Department draft, No. 7572, issued and paid, made payable to Justus Cobb, Postmaster of Middlebury and publisher of the Middlebury Register, Black print with brown border and underprint, featuring an eagle vignette titled "Transportation of the Mails" at upper left, an allegorical seated figure of Liberty at left, and a portrait bust at upper right, Countersigned by Hugh J. Anderson (1801-1881), former Governor of Maine and Sixth Auditor of the U.S. Treasury, whose office audited Post Office Department accounts during the Reconstruction era and Signed by Alexander N. Zevely (1806-1870), Third Assistant Postmaster General under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson, who oversaw stamps, registered mail, and postal stationery, and helped advance the Railway Mail Service, Reverse bears the postmaster's manuscript receipt acknowledging payment, signed "J. Cobb, P.M.," with docketing notations, No revenue stamp present. XF to AU condition. NBNC.
