Covington, Kentucky; New Castle, Sussex County, Delaware, 1833–1863, Group of 5 Lottery Tickets. Includes: Kentucky State Lottery “Extra” quarter tickets, Covington, KY, dated October 31, 1863 (Shelby College benefit) and May 19, 1863, each with bold class and combination numbers, signed by Wm. & J.E. Simms; Kentucky Extra State Lottery, Frankfort benefit issue, August 30, 1863, quarter ticket, signed by J.K. Gregory; Consolidated Lottery, New Castle, Delaware, quarter ticket, dated 1833; and State of Delaware, Sussex County Lottery, quarter ticket, dated May 27, 1844, Wilmington. Each printed in distinctive colors with ornate typographic layouts, bearing large stamped combination numerals across the face. This is a diverse and historic grouping of antebellum and Civil War-era lottery tickets from 2 different states, illustrating the widespread use of lottery financing in support of schools, civic institutions, and public projects before the practice was largely abolished in the late 19th century. Condition is attractive overall, most pieces showing sharp print detail and bold overprints, VF to AU condition or better. (5)
