Officially, Eastern was launched on May 1, 1928, when five airmen took off at night in 200-horsepower open-cockpit Mailwing airplanes each flying 300 pounds of mail between New York and Atlanta. In 1938, with a group of associates, Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker purchased the company and became President and General Manager. On August 7, 1953, he became chairman of Eastern's board. On May 27, 1975 Frank Borman, the Famous Astronaut became President and Chief operating executive officer. He was Commander of the 1968 Apollo 8 Mission and led the first team of astronauts to leave Earth's gravity and orbit the Moon. The Apollo 8 mission provided mankind's first close-up view of the lunar surface and of the dark side of the Moon. In the 1980's, Eastern fighting to keep its doors open, sold majority share holdings to Frank Lorenzo, owner of Texas Airlines. Lorenzo, filed for restructuring of Eastern Airlines under the bankruptcy laws. Lorenzo in his desire to have greater control over the airline industry brought in non union workers and created a new air fare war that many airlines could not compete against a non union airline. Carrier after carrier had filed for bankruptcy. Lorenzo took over several airlines including People Express, Continental and New York Air. Many felt Lorenzo was only interested in purchasing defunct air carriers in order to strip the carriers of its assets. Rare varieties of this well known and historic airline. Eastern closed its doors in 1991. SC-USBC. XF.
