this lot spans mintages from 1550 to 1605, covering the reigns of Edward VI to James I. Included are an Edward VI (1550-1551) cut penny, S-2474, a practice that led to design changes to facilitate the creation of small change and deter clipping; a Mary (1553-1554) groat, S-2492; a Philip & Mary (1554-1558) groat, S-2508; Elizabeth I coins from 1559 to 1600, including pennies, groats, six pence, and shillings with catalog numbers S-2553, S-2562A, S-2563 (2), S-2573, S-2565, S-2577, S-2579; and James I coins from 1602 to 1605, with a thistle merk, S-5497 (as James VI of Scotland), and a half penny, S-2663. This assemblage chronicles the evolution of English silver coinage, marked by the reigns of Edward VI, Mary, Philip & Mary, Elizabeth I, and James I (14 coins). (photo on web site)
