Florida, c.1871, $1000 First Mortgage Land Grant Convertible Construction gold coupon bond (also £200 at right); black print with green underprint and large ornamental “$1000” protector; top-center vignette of an inland waterway with vessels and town; ornate left denomination panel; embossed green company seal at lower left; serial No. 287; fully signed by company officers; with attached coupons; printer imprint not seen. Organized in 1871 under William H. Gleason, the company aimed to obtain Internal Improvement Fund swamp-land grants, cut inland canals, and reclaim lands to spur settlement; the program became entangled in litigation, with contracts rescinded in 1873 and later court decisions effectively ending the venture—making these bonds a tangible relic of Florida’s Reconstruction-era internal-improvement ambitions; attractive display piece of Florida fiscal history.
