Australia. ca. 1944-1945. (1/2) Pound, P-NL, issued banknote, uniface, left half. Fanning Island is one of the British Line Islands of the Gilbert & Ellice Island Colony, 1000 miles south of Hawaii, and was the relay station of the cable between Vancouver, BC (Canada) and Sydney (Australia). In 1942-1943, war conditions made it impossible to import stores and currency from Sydney, so there was a shortage of currency. Approximately 1000 notes numbered from 1 to 1000 were printed in Hawaii for use there. The notes were withdrawn in 1945 and all but a few were defaced by bisecting. The defaced halves were subsequently used as admission tickets to the movies by the Copra Plantation workers. Complete notes are extremely rare., Ch. Fine, annotation. (From the Allen Berk Collection)
