Washington, D.C. March 18th, 1865. Handwritten letter to Ezra Graves written by Francis E. Spinner in his hand, who was then Treasurer of the United States from 1861 to 1875. The letter states "Enclosed please find the furlough of Walter A. Bacon, for ten days additional, this moment received by me, from the Adjutant General's Office," and is complete with Spinner's distinctive signature at bottom right corner. Fine condition with toning and some splitting along fold lines, and ink stains at center. Francis Elias Spinner (January 21, 1802 - December 31, 1890) was an American politician from New York. He served as Treasurer of the United States and was the first administrator in the federal government to employ women for clerical jobs.
