Mohawk, New York, 1846. $38.47 I/C Check from Mohawk Valley Bank, Black text with George Washington depicted at left, Person in rowboat at bottom center. Signed by Francis E. Spinner as Cashier. VF condition. Francis Elias Spinner (January 21, 1802 – December 31, 1890) was an American politician from New York. He served as Treasurer of the United States from 1861 to 1875, under presidents Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, and Ulysses S. Grant. He also was the first administrator in the federal government to employ women for clerical jobs. Spinner cultivated his singular autograph, seen on paper money, checks and other financial documents, in order to prevent counterfeiting.
