Augusta, Georgia, 1856. $5, Issued Obsolete Banknote, Black print with multiple vignettes of woman at left right and center, S/N 598 pp B, VF to XF condition, UB&S. Issued by the Mechanics Bank of Augusta, Georgia, this note circulated during the Confederacy when the state's commercial banks provided critical financial support through loans, deposits, and bond purchases. Augusta remained a major Confederate industrial center, including the Confederate Powder Works, which allowed its banks to operate throughout the war and makes notes from this institution closely tied to the Southern wartime economy and civilian commerce.
