Georgia, 1773, 20 Shillings, P-Unlisted, Issued, S/N 9004. A piece from one of the earlier issues of Georgia - 1773. A large size note with beautiful bright red and black printing. An interesting feature of these notes is the method used to prevent counterfeit detection. Each note was hand cut on the left from a ledger. A serial number was then inserted on both the note and the remaining part of the note that was left in the ledger. When the note was then ultimately redeemed it could be physically matched against the unique irregular cut left in the ledger to insure that it was the original note issued. Previously in the Ford collection and sold by Stack's in 2004, Stacks described this note as Extremely Fine + despite some partial splits which are reinforced on the back with hinged tape. The paper is crisp and fresh with the red text plate showing its deep embossing still. The face bright and super wide margins. A rare issue, and especially so in this superb state. Value $3500. (ex-John Ford, May 2004, Lot 768, Sold for $2990).
