New York, 1827. Document from the People of the State of New York, appointing John V. S. Overbagh as Captain of Artillery of the 131st Regiment of Infantry of the State. Witnessed and signed by De Witt Clinton as Governor of New York at bottom right. Black text and handwriting, Embossed Excelsior seal at bottom left. Fine condition with holes from fold lines at center, fragile margins, and some toning. DeWitt Clinton (March 2, 1769 - February 11, 1828), whose name was almost always spelled De Witt during his lifetime and until the late 20th century, was an American politician and naturalist. He served as a United States senator, as the mayor of New York City, and as the seventh governor of New York. In this last capacity, he was largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal. Clinton was a major candidate for the American presidency in the election of 1812, challenging incumbent James Madison.
