The Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation of Bethpage, New York, was one of the most important builders of military aircraft in the 20th century. From the company's beginning in 1930, through the end of 1946, Grumman designed and built several U.S. Navy aircraft that established the firm's reputation for outstanding aeronautical engineering. Grumman built one of the classic combat planes of the second great war, the F6F "Hellcat". The Apollo program called for several moon landings, each using two spaceships. The command modules, manufactured by McDonnell Douglas, were intended to orbit the moon while the lunar modules, built by Grumman, landed on the moon. Northrop Corporation in mid-1994 acquired Grumman for $2.1 billion. ABNC. XF.
