Cambridgeport, Massachusetts. April 13th, 1853. Several page, handwritten letter from Warren Burton to the widow of Doctor Nichols, a very dear friend, relative, and mentor to the author. The writing is expressive and emotional, discussing at length Dr. Nichols' kindness, generosity, and warmth. Burton met Nichols as a child, when the doctor pulled out a pair of teeth that were troubling the young boy. Burton discusses the subsequent visits he had with the doctor throughout his life, "I used to admire his philosophic tastes & also especially his poetic spirit. He gave me my first distinct desire to study Botany; speaking to me of the usefulness & the charm of the science, & quoting poetry about flowers with great enthusiasm." He goes on to write, "According to my own recollection, it was the large, the loving, the world-embracing spirit of my friend Dr. Nichols, which first gave me a distinct impression that there was such a principal, such a sentiment, such a life as is expressed by the word Philanthropy. I love his memory; rather I love him, for here, just within the veil, close by, in human form, body & limb, a perfect human organization, he is now. By God’s leave he shall come near you to comfort your widowed heart." Black handwriting on off-blue paper, Fine-VF condition with very faint splitting along fold lines at center. Incredible letter with beautiful sentiments from the heart.
