TheTimed Internet Auction will take place on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 beginning at 11:00 AM EST.
Lot includes 2 pieces, both are related and from 1966: A facsimile copy on thin yellow paper of a March 29th typewritten letter from Matthew L. Lifflander to Harry S. Truman, stating that "I have for many years been a staunch admirer of yours, as well as an active Democratic Committeeman in Westchester County." Lifflander states that both President Johnson and Vice President Humphrey sent along personally autographed pictures "in appreciation of some of my political activities with the President's Club of New York." He continues "I feel very badly, however, displaying these fine momentous [sic] in my office without having one of yourself, whom I regard as our greatest President." Lifflander then asks Truman for an autographed photo to be personally inscribed to him. The second piece is the April 1st reply from Harry Truman, showing his appreciation for the letter, and stating that an autographed photograph was enclosed with the letter, which also bears his autograph at bottom. Harry S. Truman (May 8, 1884 - December 26, 1972) was an American politician who served as the 33rd president of the United States from 1945 to 1953. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 34th vice president from January to April 1945 under President Franklin Roosevelt and as a United States Senator from Missouri from 1935 to January 1945. Having assumed the presidency after Roosevelt's death, Truman implemented the Marshall Plan to rebuild the economy of Western Europe and established both the Truman Doctrine and NATO to contain the expansion of communism. He proposed numerous liberal domestic reforms, but few were enacted by the Conservative Coalition which dominated the Congress. The original copy is in fine condition with some signs of wear, whereas the reply from Truman is in VF condition. Interesting pair of letters. (2)
