Alabama, 1840-41. Group of 10 Issued First Exchanges from Hazard & Fowler, Black text with thin black border, various handstamps, Company seal at left. Fine condition. Hazard & Fowler were cotton brokers involved in the cotton trade between the North and the South in the early to mid-1800s and into the Civil War era. Following the War of 1812, a huge increase in the production of cotton resulted in an economic boom, and by midcentury, cotton was the key cash crop of the southern economy and the most important American commodity.
