No Date, ca. 1880-1900s. Handwritten short biography of John Ancrum Winslow, Commander in the United States Navy, on thick cardstock, Pasted piece of paper at top with his name and rank, with an incorrect year of birth, 11 x 16.5 cms. John Ancrum Winslow (1810-1873) was an officer in the United States Navy during the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. He was in command of the steam sloop of war USS Kearsarge during her historic 1864 action off Cherbourg, France, with the Confederate sea raider CSS Alabama. Advanced to rear admiral in 1870, Winslow commanded the Pacific Squadron from that year to 1872. He was always known as a solid, courageous, determined officer. Shortly after his retirement, he died in Boston. His coffin was draped in the Kearsarge's battle flag, and a slab of stone from Mount Kearsarge in New Hampshire covered his grave. This piece lists some of his notable accomplishments throughout his life. Fine condition with some aging.
