Newark, NJ. 15 cents, 1862, Wait 1356, R-6. Agens, who ran a newspaper and periodical store at 1 Commerce Street in Newark issued both scrip, such as this remainder note, and store card tokens. Both were obviously used to make change for day-to-day transactions. The scrip is interesting in that it has an undertint which features the issuer's name. This is a new variety for the 15¢ denomination and the only issued example for this denomination seen. Heritage offered a remainder in 2018 that sold for over $400 in similar condition. Very Fine.
