Scranton, Pennsylvania, October 18, 1860. Fascinating 2-page handwritten letter with rich political content. The author, Joseph J. Henry, writes that "I shall come down ten days before election & see if am assessed for I'm bound to put in a vote for the Hon. Abraham Lincoln of Ill." This piece goes on to say that "The Wide Awakes have turned out this evening for drill & parade." The Wide Awakes were a youth organization and later a paramilitary organization cultivated by the Republican Party during the 1860 presidential election in the United States. The group supported Lincoln, and were used by the Lincoln campaign to spearhead large voter registration drives since they knew that new voters and young voters tend to embrace new and young parties. Incredible first-hand account of voting for Abraham Lincoln, one of the United States' greatest leaders.
