Louisville, Kentucky, 1851. 4 Shares, I/U Capital Stock Certificate, Black print with black border, Multiple vignettes include nude man, Benjamin Franklin, Martha Washington, Patriotic Bald Eagle with shield, allegorical man with staff, and more, S/N 762, The title on the certificate is extremely long and is listed as "O'Rielly's Atlantic, Lake and Mississippi Range People's Line of Telegraph Between Louisville, Nashville, Memphis, Tuscumbia, Jackson and New Orleans", shortened to the "People's Telegraph Line between Louisville & New Orleans", The People’s Telegraph Line was incorporated in Kentucky in 1848 to establish a telegraph connection between Louisville and New Orleans, linking key commercial centers along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Burdened by heavy debt and construction problems, the company soon struggled against the rival New Orleans & Ohio Telegraph Co. In 1853, the two lines merged under the leadership of Norvin Green, who later rose to prominence as president of Western Union. VF condition with toning. RWH&E, Cincinnati.
